Does My Teen Need Full Coverage Insurance?

January 15, 2026 | By Brady Ingle

Adding a teen driver to your auto policy is one of the most expensive insurance moments for Rowlett families. Your rates can double, sometimes more. So naturally, parents ask me: do we really need full coverage for a 16-year-old?

First, What Is Full Coverage?

Full coverage is not actually a technical term. It is shorthand for liability plus collision plus comprehensive. Liability covers damage you cause to others. Collision covers damage to your car from accidents. Comprehensive covers theft, weather, and other non-collision events.

When people ask about dropping to liability-only, they mean cutting collision and comprehensive to save money.

The Real Question: What Are You Driving?

Here is the honest answer: it depends on the car.

  • If your teen drives a $3,000 used car, liability-only might make sense. The math changes when the annual premium costs more than the car is worth.
  • If your teen drives a newer vehicle worth $15,000 or more, you probably want full coverage. A single accident could cost you the entire car.
  • If the car is financed or leased, you typically must carry full coverage anyway.

The Texas Factor

Here in Rowlett and the DFW area, we have specific risks to consider. Hailstorms can total a car in minutes. Comprehensive coverage protects against that. If you drop comprehensive, you are betting against Texas weather.

Ways to Save That Are Not Dropping Coverage

  • Good student discounts (most insurers offer 10-25% off for B average or better)
  • Driver training course completion
  • Higher deductibles (if you can afford to pay more out of pocket)
  • Monitoring devices that track safe driving
  • Bundling with home insurance

My Recommendation

For most Rowlett families, I recommend keeping full coverage on teen drivers unless the car is genuinely worth less than a year of premiums. The peace of mind is worth it when teens are statistically the highest-risk drivers on the road.

But every situation is different. Bring me your specific numbers and I will tell you honestly whether it makes sense to keep full coverage or go liability-only.

The Bottom Line

Full coverage for teens is expensive, but dropping it is a gamble. Know what you are risking before you make that call, and exhaust the discounts first.
